Keeping Warm with River Road
With the grips of winter still holding on strong, it seems quite the impossibility to escape the bitter chill that has taken up residence in each of us. Even with layers of clothes on, you can’t seem to escape the feeling of being cold. It gives you the impression that it resides in the very core of your being. How then, can you make that chill melt away?
On a recent trip to River Road, I sought to find out just that. My first stop was the Empress Diner, where I spoke to owner, John Melissas. He finds that most customers prefer “comfort food” in the winter. Dishes such as meatloaf, pasta and hot open faced sandwiches are the order of the day. Soup is popular as well, but tends to be an addition to a filling meal that feels like home. John also believes that the best thing about a family owned establishment is that everything is made from scratch and from the heart.
The next stop on my trip was to Casa de la Trova. I spoke to the host of the restaurant. When asked what dishes his customers choose to stay warm in winter, he replied, “All Cuban food keeps you warm in winter!” He then went on to say that the Ropa Vieja is popular with the customers, as well as the Café con Leche. With recipes like this steeped in tradition, how can you go wrong?
For the remainder of the winter, no matter which eatery on River Rd you choose to frequent, rest assured that each of them has a way to help you thaw from the inside out. Keep this in mind as we move closer to the actual first day of spring and know that this long, cold winter can’t hold on forever.
