The wide sidewalk in front of 12-38 River Road regularly teems with the comings and goings of exuberant children in colorful leotards and tights – the students of Fair Lawn’s Dance Designs Performing Arts Center. This popular arts center is celebrating its 25 th Anniversary this year and has been a vital member of Fair Lawn’s business and cultural community since it was established by Owner and Creative Director Carol Baskinger.

Carol is an experienced, certified teacher who has vast show business experience as an actress, dancer, choreographer, and vocalist, as do her Dance Design staff members.

Dance Designs Performing Arts Center not only offers classes in traditional dance forms such as ballet, tap, jazz, and modern dance, but also teaches Hip Hop, ballroom, Cheerdance, Breaking, and “Da Funk” classes, which feature the latest club dance moves. Instruction in Yoga and Pilates is available to those seeking to improve balance, strength, and flexibility. In addition, the school offers classes in performing techniques, including Drama, Musical Theatre, Voice, Scene Study, and TV Commercials & Voice-overs.

Dance Designs has one of the largest adult curriculums in the area, offering both group and private instruction to the more mature student who still appreciates the joys and benefits of these classes. At the other end of the spectrum, the school’s youngest student is 1-1/2 years old, enrolled in “Toddler Time”.

Dance Designs is a popular children’s party spot, where birthday dance parties provide merry structured activities for kids of all ages.

Carol chose Fair Lawn as the ideal site for her school. “It’s a large community with an appreciation of the arts and a diverse ethnic mix,” she says. “Everyone in Bergen County knows the area and it is easily accessible. It’s a safe community with a real family oriented focus.”
